How Can I Save Money During The Holidays?
Let it snow, let it snow, let it snow… Christmas is upon us, and while spending time with family and friends is refreshing and joyous, blowing your Christmas shopping budget on astronomical utility bills is most certainly not. Here are some excellent ways you can save some money on your gas and electric bill this winter.
Decorate with Candles
Candles are an excellent alternative to electric powered holiday lights – and they won’t cost you a dime in utility charges. Just be sure to keep the flames away from combustible materials and high enough so that curious kids and pets can’t get to them.
Set Holiday Lights with a Timer
A programmable timer lets you program your holiday lights to run on a schedule that you design so that you never have to worry about forgetting to turn them off.
Look For the Energy Star Label
Energy Star rated appliances and electronics are designed to use significantly less electricity. Sometimes as much as 60% less than non-Energy Star label items.
Use Led Lights & Fiber Optic Decorations
Using energy-efficient LED lights can cut your electricity usage down by as much as 90%
Cook Smarter
Cook as many meals and dishes as you can all at once. Bake the ham along with the sweet potatoes, bake dinner rolls and cookies all at once, and cook pies and casseroles together.
Adjust the Thermostat
When you have a house full of people, you don’t need to set your thermostat quite as high. More bodies mean more warmth, so turn the thermostat down a few degrees and give your furnace and your bank account a break. Turning down your thermostat just one degree can save you up to 5%.
Let Your Tree Light the Room
If your Christmas tree is on, turn off other lights in the room whenever you can. You will have more than enough light to move around if you need to, and you won’t waste energy using lights you don’t need.
