How does a water filter work?

A lot of people own a water filter, but how many of them actually know how does a water filter work? A water filter is a key component in your home plumbing system. Your water filter is responsible for protecting your plumbing, water heater, pipes, and appliances from scale build up. Water Filter Parts & Components

Let’s start our research into how water filters work by defining the key components.

Free Board

The water filter free board is the where filter media can expand. This area also allows the dirt that accumulates on top of the media to be flushed out during regeneration.

Dip Tube

The water filter dip tube is the same as a distribution tube or riser tube.

Activated Carbon Bed

Our water filters use what is known as granulated activated carbon (GAC) or highly activated carbon (HAC0. It is our opinion that all activated carbon will perform the same.

Gravel

The gravel layer protects the lower basket of the dip tube and keeps the carbon media from entering the dip tube or passing into the home. The gravel layer allows for water to easily pass.

Kinetic Degradation Fluxion

Kinetic Degradation Fluxion (KDF) is a high-purity copper-zinc formulation that uses a basic chemical process known as redox (oxidation/reduction) to remove chlorine, lead, mercury, iron, and hydrogen sulfide from the water. KDF also has an anti-bacterial, algaecidic, and fungicidic effect. KDF may also reduce the accumulation of lime scale.

Inlet Valve

Our water filters use a rotary valve so the water will always enter on the left hand side of the water filter.

Water Filter Drain

The water filter drain is 3/4″ MNPT and is where the filter drains and flushes itself during regeneration.

Outlet valve

The outlet valve is located on the right hand side of the water filter. This is usually opposite of most manufacturer’s and is the result of our rotary valve design.

Water Filter Filtration Process

First, water enters the filter through the inlet valve. As the water enters the water filtration unit it is diverted through the activated carbon bed. This starts the filtration process. The water pressure in most homes is between 40 and 75 psi. As the water passes through the catalytic carbon media a dynamic process takes place. The water pressure compacts the media, which makes it difficult for large contaminants to pass through. By the time the water reaches the basket inside the gravel it has been filtered. The filtered water then flows up through the center distribution tube where it flows out to the home.

At some point the activated carbon will become full of debris and contaminants, making the filter ineffective. Now it is time to give the water filter a recharge. We do this through a process called water filter regeneration.
