Comfort Heroes, Heating & Cooling Gives Away A Free Furnace To A Cancer Patient

Local Harrisburg woman fighting cancer and a brain tumor gets a free heating system installed.

Sioux Falls, SD – March 1, 2017. Comfort Heroes installed a free Trane furnace as part of it’s annual Give The Gift of Heat program. There were 89 families nominated for a free furnace primarily from the Sioux Falls area. Sandy Boelhower, a long time resident of Harrisburg, SD was selected after being nominated by her daughter Heather Williams. Sandy Boelhower has an inoperable brain tumor and three different forms of cancer including lung cancer and kidney cancer. A couple of months ago the furnace man said the furnace was leaking carbon monoxide into the house. Sandy said, “We couldn’t afford a new one and we needed heat. We had no choice but to keep using it. The other company plugged in a carbon monoxide detector and left.”

Carbon monoxide is known as the silent killer because it is odorless, tasteless, colorless and non-irritating. It also kills very quickly. According to the Air Conditioning, Heating and Refrigeration Institute (AHRI) if there is any type of crack, split, hole or deterioration to the heat exchanger then it needs replaced or a new furnace installed. Sandy and her daughter Heather have had unexplained headaches for months… likely from the carbon monoxide build up in the home.

The management team at Comfort Heroes reviewed all of the nominations and narrowed it down to ten candidates, then five, before they selected Sandy as the winner on February 17th, 2017. Office manager Amanda Gentry said, “Sandy has been through so much. She has been fighting cancer for eight years, has undergone numerous surgeries and has an inoperable brain tumor. We knew we had to do something to help her out.”

Comfort Heroes owner Alan Gentry had this to say, “Many of the nominations were very moving. We’re talking about families fighting cancer, unemployment, disability and other hardships. We wish we could give all of these families a free furnace.”

Sandy’s old furnace was approximately 29 years old and had numerous problems due to age, basement flooding, lack of maintenance and a rusted out heat exchanger. Her new Trane furnace comes with a 10 year warranty on the parts and a 20 year warranty on the heat exchanger. Owner Alan Gentry went on to say, “We install Trane furnaces and air conditioners because they are simply the best in the industry. Just because we installed this furnace for free doesn’t mean we are going to slap in a cheap off-brand furnace. Sandy’s new system will last her a very long time.” The installers also put the new furnace up on blocks so that if the basement floods again the furnace won’t get damaged.

The installation took about six hours and included the furnace, duct work, and a high efficiency air filter. At the end of the day Sandy said she was very thankful that a company from Sioux Falls would step up and help someone out like this.
