One of the most common questions our customer service representatives receive each day is this. How much does it cost to install a 40 gallon hot water heater? Or this, how much does it cost to install a 40 gallon gas water heater?

How much does a Rheem water heater cost installed?
Each year we install hundreds of water heaters in Sioux Falls, Tea, Brandon, Harrisburg, and the surrounding areas. Our average installed price of a 40 gallon natural gas water heater without code upgrades or permit is roughly about $1,250.
Of course if your existing water heater is not up to code then there could be some added costs involved. For instance, if you live in Sioux Falls we will need to pull a permit with the water heater. Most water heaters will need an expansion tank installed with them. Some water heaters will need to have a ball valve installed or a gas cock replaced. We even run into some water heaters that will need to have the flue piping replaced or a chimney liner installed.
Once you start adding in a permit, a thermal expansion tank, new valves, or venting the cost can rise considerably. This is why in the article we wrote in 2017 we stated that it is not uncommon for a water heater installation per code to cost between $1,800 and $2,300.
Peace of Mind Water Heater Pricing
At Comfort Heroes Plumbing, Heating and Air we use what we call “Peace of Mind” pricing. This means that we will quote the work for your home down to the penny before the work begins. We will then present your options to you and you will approve of a specific project with your signature. Once you approve of the charges we will get down to work and make your maintenance problems a thing of the past.
Peace of Mind pricing means we will not change the price of the work within the scope of the project. For instance, let’s say we quote you a water heater replacement and it ends up taking us six hours instead of the four we estimated. As long as the scope of work is the same we will not change the price. However, if we start replacing the water heater and when we disconnect the chimney we find a broken chimney liner, then we will get you a price on that as an added item. There will be additional charges because we didn’t get you a price to install a chimney liner, we got you a price to install the water heater only. These instances are rare, but that is why we are writing about it here and now. We never want you to be surprised or disappointed.
