What to Check If Your HVAC System Isn’t Working: A Homeowner’s Guide

When your HVAC system stops working, it can feel like a crisis—especially during a sweltering summer or a freezing winter. Before you panic, there are a few simple things you can check to potentially get your system back on track. At Comfort Heroes, we’ve put together this guide to help you troubleshoot common HVAC issues. Let’s dive into the key things to inspect when your heating or cooling isn’t performing as it should.

1. Check the Thermostat

Your thermostat is the brain of your HVAC system. If it’s not working properly, your system won’t either. Start by ensuring it’s set to the right mode—“cool” for air conditioning or “heat” for heating—and that the temperature is adjusted to your desired level. Replace the batteries if it’s battery-operated, as a dead battery can halt everything. If the display is blank or unresponsive, this could be the culprit.

2. Inspect the Power Supply

A tripped circuit breaker or blown fuse might be why your HVAC system isn’t turning on. Head to your electrical panel and look for a tripped breaker tied to your HVAC unit—flip it back on if needed. For outdoor units, check the disconnect box nearby (usually a small metal box mounted near the unit) to ensure the switch is in the “on” position. If the breaker immediately turns off or the fuse is blown we recommend calling for service.

3. Look at the Air Filter

A clogged air filter is one of the most common reasons for HVAC failure. When it’s dirty, airflow gets restricted, causing your system to overwork or shut down completely. Locate your filter—typically found in the return air duct or near the indoor unit—and hold it up to a light. If you can’t see through it, replace it with a fresh one. This simple fix can often restore performance instantly.

4. Examine the Outdoor Unit

If your air conditioner isn’t cooling, head outside to the condenser unit. Clear away any debris like leaves, grass, or dirt that might be blocking airflow. Ensure there’s at least two feet of clearance around it. Also, listen for odd noises—if it’s silent, there could be an electrical issue; if it’s rattling, something might be loose.

5. Check for Frozen Coils

Frozen evaporator coils can stop your system cold (pun intended). Inside your indoor unit, look for ice buildup on the coils. If you spot frost, turn off the system and let it thaw for a few hours. This could be due to low refrigerant or poor airflow—both of which might need professional attention.

6. Listen for Unusual Sounds

Strange noises like grinding, squealing, or banging are red flags. A squealing sound might mean a loose belt, while banging could signal a broken component. Turn off the system immediately if you hear anything unusual to prevent further damage.

7. Verify Drainage

Your HVAC system produces condensation, especially when cooling. If the drain line clogs, water can back up and trigger a safety switch that shuts the system down. Look for a PVC pipe near the indoor unit and check for standing water or leaks. Clearing a clog might require a wet/dry vacuum or a plumber’s snake.
