Do I need a whole home humidifier?

Humidity is one of the most important components of home comfort. It not only plays a major role in your comfort, but it is also important in creating a healthy home. Humidity must be perfectly balanced. Air that is too humid can promote mold growth or make your home feel like a damp dungeon. At the other end of the spectrum, air that is too dry can lead to dry skin, dry nasal passages, and result in damage to the wood in your home.

At Comfort Heroes, we know how to strike the balance to keep your family and home comfortable by installing a whole house humidifier and dehumidifier.

What Is A Whole Home Humidifier?

A whole home humidifier adds humidity to the air in your home from a central point, normally your furnace or air handler. A central unit is much more effective at balancing humidity in the home than a portable humidifier is.

How Does A Whole Home Humidifier Work?

There are primarily three different types of whole home humidifiers that we install. They are bypass humidifier, fan powered humidifier, and a steam humidifier. Each one of these systems can be ducted directly into your air distribution center where the added moisture can be evenly distributed to each room in your home.

Portable vs Whole Home Humidifier

A central humidifier is superior to a portable unit because it treats your whole home, takes up zero room in your living spaces, and it does not require daily maintenance like re-filling or cleaning. A whole home humidifier will cost a a substantial amount more than portable units, but the benefits far outweigh the cost, especially in predominantly heating climates up North.

Why Get a Humidifier

If the air you breathe during winter feels dry then it’s time to purchase a whole-home humidifier. Low humidity levels in your home not only contribute to things like dry and itchy skin, static shocks, and nose bleeds, but it also can damage your home. When the relative humidity in your home drops the air will start to pull moisture out of everything in the home including structure, hard wood floors, furniture, and cabinets. The drying effect usually results in cracks and gaps in the wood.

What Is The Right Amount of Humidity?

The proper humidity level for your home is a little bit subjective, but here are some general guidelines. During summer, humidity should be kept between 40 and no more than 50%. Winter humidity levels should generally fall between 30 and 40%. Most models come with an “automatic” setting which will automatically adjust indoor humidity levels to that water does not run down or freeze on the windows.

Dry indoor air is very common in winter months and can contribute to many health conditions, such as:

  • Dry throat
  • Dry nasal passages
  • Dry skin
  • Itchy Skin
  • Coughing
  • Dry eyes
  • Bloody noses
  • Headaches
  • Feelings of illness

Our mission at Comfort Heroes Plumbing, Heating & Air is to ensure that you live a safe and comfortable life. Installing a whole home humidifier helps you to do both. Learn more about how adding humidity can help ease winter health problems here.
